An ROV umbilical cable is the lifeline between a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) and the vessel. It transmits power, data, and signals, enabling reliable operations even at great depths.
 
A tether is usually a shorter lightweigt cable that connects the ROV to a Tether Management System (TMS). The umbilical connects the TMS to the vessel. 
In ROV systems, two main types of dynamic cables are used: tethers (which connect the ROV to a Tether Management System or directly to a surface vessel) and umbilicals (larger, more complex cables that connect the TMS  to the vessel).
 
Unlike many off-the-shelf solutions, DeRegt designs and manufactures cables that integrate multiple functions into a single, tailored solution – combining data transmission, power delivery, and mechanical strength. This approach ensures optimal performance under the specific conditions of each ROV system.
 
Because every ROV has its own design, depth rating, and operational requirements, there is no “one-size-fits-all” cable. DeRegt’s strength lies in creating unique hybrid solutions that maximize reliability, efficiency, and lifespan, while enabling customers to operate at their full potential.
To create the best-fit solution, we need insight into the mechanical properties (e.g. load, bending, torque), data requirements (bandwidth, fiber optics), power requirements, and the environmental conditions (depth, temperature, seawater exposure). With this information we co-create the optimal design.
A hybrid ROV cable integrates multiple functions, such as power conductors, fiber optics, and signal lines, while also carrying mechanical load in a single cable. This saves space, reduces system complexity, and increases operational reliability.
The lifespan of an umbilical cable depends heavily on operational conditions, frequency of use, and handling practices. At DeRegt, we help customers evaluate these factors to maximize service life. In addition, our field service team supports inspection, maintenance, and in-field repairs to extend cable lifetime.
ROV lift cables are engineered from a carefully selected combination of materials, each chosen to meet the specific operational requirements of the system.
 
  • Power & signal transmission: diverse copper alloys for optimal conductivity and durability.
  • Data transfer: fiber optics for high-speed, reliable communication.
  • Mechanical strength: steel or advanced synthetic strength members (e.g. Kevlar) to handle extreme loads and dynamic forces.
  • Protection & flexibility: various polymers and engineered plastics to provide insulation, abrasion resistance, and environmental protection.
 
Rather than using fixed “standard” designs, DeRegt determines the exact material composition for each cable in close cooperation with the client. This ensures that every cable is optimized for performance, reliability, and lifespan under the customer’s unique operating conditions.
 
A Tether Management System (TMS) umbilical provides the link between the main umbilical and the ROV. It ensures smooth cable management, reducing strain on the main cable and extending operational flexibility.
